Shanghai Water System uses i.LON 100 with WebAccess to monitor and control water floodgates.
Water utility manages flood control facilities remotely using Echelon's LonWorks technology and Broadwin's WebAccess HMI/SCADA software.

November 18, 2004 - San Ramon, California

The Shanghai Water District is part of the Tai Lake Basin supervisory system which monitors and controls water floodgates in and around Shanghai, China using LonWorks automation hardware, Echelon i.LON 100 Internet Servers and Broadwin WebAccess software. The system was  commissioned and brought on-line during the summer of 2004. The Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system monitors 36 Water floodgates using 13 WebAccess SCADA nodes communicating to Echelon i.LON 100 Internet Servers for remote monitoring and control from a central control center via a secure WAN. The floodgate sites are normally unmanned, but the system also allows local monitoring and control. Broadwin Technology's WebAccess, a web-based HMI and SCADA software package, provides animated graphic displays, real-time data from the LonWorks field controllers, dynamically updated trends, alarms and live video.

Echelon's LonWorks Technology

Echelon's LonWorks was selected for the reliability provided by its distributed, multiple-node network architecture. Each node in the LONWORKS architecture runs independently of the others. Echelon's i.LON 100 was selected for its IP connectivity and the ability to access data remotely.

Implementing WebAccess

Broadwin's WebAccess software was the most direct way to implement Internet-technology to access the remote automation systems. The WebAccess SCADA node software is installed on ordinary personal computers to provide a readily available, off-the-shelf solution.

Figure 1 - Network Drawing of Shanghai Water SCADA system components.

The SCADA node software acts as an Operator's Station and/or an Engineering Station used by plant engineers and operators to monitor and control the water floodgates. It also is used as a link between the automation system and the central control center via the WAN. The Broadwin WebAccess i.LON 100 driver handles a SOAP/XML interface to the i.LON 100 automatically without any knowledge of SOAP or XML required by the user. The user only needs to enter the network or IP address of the i.LON 100 and the name of the data points to be read or written.

Management and Operators access real-time data

Central Control Center operators, managers and engineers can view process graphics, real-time trends, historical trends, reports, event logs and alarms that update every minute using an ordinary web browser (Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0).

The Web Access software provides security to grant or deny access to individual modules, so that users can access only the information needed or authorized. Three levels of users (managers, operators and emergency personnel) are able to monitor the system using ordinary web browsers via a secure WAN or dial-up modem.

Live Video for monitoring of Floodgates

The WebAccess HMI software also integrates live video camera feeds from each remote site to provide visual confirmation of floodgate position using an ordinary web browser in the same window as the animated graphic displays and trends.

Engineers and Technical Personnel: Remote Software Support

The WebAccess software and Echelon's LonMakER software also provide a significant benefit to the process engineers and control system engineers by enabling "remote software" support. Without leaving their offices at the central control center, technical support personnel can log onto the control system at any remote facility using an ordinary web browser. They can modify graphics, modify the IO database and restart nodes. Using Broadwin's WebAccess software and Echelon LonWorks technology enables complete automation system support through a TCP/IP based network and an ordinary web browser.

Innovation for the Future

For the Shanghai Water District, integration of the remote floodgate facilities into a single system using Internet Technology is an innovation to increase reliability, efficiency and safety of the water distribution system. Real-time data can be accessed directly using an ordinary web browser by management. Engineers, operators and technical personnel can support the control system remotely through an IP based network using appropriate security features. For the water district, managing facilities at many locations, making real-time data available via a WAN increases system reliability and uptime, improves monitoring and control of water, and reduces costs to support the software and hardware at remote facilities.
